Workshop
Workshop
Workshop
Workshop
To welcome its new members, the teachers and members of the Starriver High School TV Station held the first general meeting
of the 2026 academic year, and then ran four workshops for different roles. From post-production editing to photography and videography, from news writing to hosting and public speaking, the new cohort has now truly taken up its posts.
In the month since the semester began, the station’s teachers and students ran a recruitment drive that included posters, in-class presentations and interviews. After comprehensive review and discussion, a group of Grade 10 students stood out and joined the station, bringing new energy to the team.
At the assembly, Mr. Chen, the teacher in charge of SSBSTV Station, first welcomed all those present and introduced the station’s departmental structure, workflow, and reward and penalty system to the new Grade 10 members, explaining the requirements of its four departments one by one: photography and videography, news writing, post-production editing, and hosting.
Deputy Head of the Station Elan Zhu then shared her thoughts. She said the first change that journalism brought her was in her way of thinking: she used to attend an event simply as a spectator, but once she walked in with an interview and reporting assignment, she began to ask herself — which moments deserve to be recorded, and how would I tell this event to someone who has never been here? She admitted that her first attempt at covering a sports meet left her at a loss, and that only through writing more did she gradually find her method. She also noted that AI can quickly produce a piece that looks complete, but real news writing still requires repeated thought about how to report an event precisely, clearly and comprehensively — while keeping a literary quality. What she has learned most at the station, she said, is the value of collaboration: when the writer, photographer, host and editor each do their part and cover for one another, an idea in the mind slowly becomes a finished work.
Head of the Station Haoning Luo’s remarks were the most distinctive part of the assembly. He began with a set of photos from his summer travels, and many new members were puzzled: why talk about his own photos at a TV station assembly? He did not rush to explain. Instead he spoke about photography itself — photographs record not awards or honours, but the traces of time and the small moments of everyday life.
Then the screen filled with the station’s work photos from the past three years: the events they had filmed together, the final cuts they had edited together, turned back one by one. He hoped everyone would love life, love the station’s work, love themselves, and love the classmates around them. The room broke into loud applause.
After the two speeches, the four Grade 11 departmental heads — Xuanye Yu, Yichen Zhang, Alice Liu and Michael Mi — took the stage in turn to introduce themselves and the departments they oversee.
Mr. Taylor Yao, head of the news writing team, then offered his own remarks. In closing, Mr. Chen stressed once more that he hoped every member would work as one and keep pressing forward, adding a little of Starriver’s own spark to the school — and to themselves.
The atmosphere stayed warm throughout, filled with laughter and applause. The assembly drew to a close with a group photo of all members, capturing the first “family portrait” of the new Starriver TV Station.
With the assembly over, the training took over. The four workshops unfolded over the following weeks, moving new members from “watching” to “hands-on.”
Workshop1
The post-production workshop on September 28 was led by Xuanye Yu and Chenyu Kong. They first walked through the station’s routine post-production workflow and the software it uses, then guided everyone through the DaVinci Resolve interface and its editing, color and delivery pages.
In the editing session, Xuanye Yu started from the basic workspace and workflow, then drew on the different types of video the station regularly handles to explain how editing rhythm, shot transitions and the choice of footage shift with subject and setting — understanding “when to cut, and how” matters more than memorizing where the tools are.
For color, Chenyu Kong began with the waveform monitor, so that students could learn to judge brightness and color from relatively objective data; he then moved from single-node work to coordination across multiple nodes, and finally covered the delivery requirements for resolution, bitrate and other parameters. At the end, Mr. Chen relayed Principal Tang’s expectations and requirements for the station once again, and encouraged students to put what they had learned into their upcoming shoots and productions.
Workshop2
The pre-production workshop on September 29 was led by Yichen Zhang and Jinshu Wang, focusing on camera operation and composition.
Drawing on actual settings, hands-on camera videos and past work, Yichen Zhang moved from photo and video formats to exposure and focus, and from shutter modes and drive modes to white balance, explaining why each parameter is set the way it is; he ended by reminding everyone to check the memory card’s remaining capacity and the battery level before shooting. Jinshu Wang then used photos taken at campus events to analyze common compositions — centered, rule of thirds, leading lines — and how to look for foreground and background, so that students formed their own understanding of framing in different settings.
Workshop3
The news writing workshop on October 12 was led in turn by Elan Zhu, Michael Mi and Sophie Chen, together with Mr. Taylor Yao, head of the news writing team.
Elan Zhu introduced ssbstvnews.com, a news writing guide site built by station members, which collects guidance on covering performances, campus sports and formal events and includes a Q&A board where questions can be asked by name or anonymously. She stressed that one or two quotes with a personal voice often carry more power than repeated words like “youth” and “striving.”
Michael Mi, speaking under the title “You Are Not a Bystander,” advised writers to interview participants on site, ask “why” more often, and get the spelling of names and classes right; he also warned that AI can polish language and organize ideas, but a fully generated article will be full of “AI flavor.”
Sophie Chen explained the inverted pyramid: the lead carries the five Ws and one H, important facts come first, and background comes last. Mr. Yao then introduced the news writing team’s new standards: the Chinese and English versions are written independently by two students, revised by editors and authors, and finally reviewed and released by teachers and the principal.
Workshop4
The last was the hosting and public speaking workshop, led by Alice Liu and Harry Zhu. They noted that hosting is not limited to atrium exhibition interviews, but also covers major school events such as sports meets, charity fairs and club recruitment; before hosting, one should confirm the language, duration and flow in advance, and visit the exhibition to understand its theme.
For interview preparation, hosts should contact interviewees proactively, dig into their stories, and draft an outline beforehand. On site, hosts can open the topic and introduce the background, let interviewees supply the details, and then summarize; they should also look into the camera, keep a steady pace, and use body language appropriately.
Turning to public speaking, the two speakers pointed out that it resembles hosting but leaves less room for error — hosting is about smooth flow, speaking about conveying a point of view — so choosing a good topic and angle matters more, as does recording oneself during practice, focusing on logic rather than wording, and keeping eye contact with the audience.
From one assembly to four workshops, over the course of more than a month, the new members have moved from “being welcomed” to “being able to work,” and have begun taking part in real shoots and productions. May the members of the new Starriver TV Station grow through practice after practice, and carry this love of recording forward, generation after generation!
