Recently, a small yet captivating exhibition on dragon boat culture was held on the fourth floor, drawing considerable student interest. The curator guided visitors through the thousand-year history and cultural significance of this traditional Chinese sport.
The exhibition was divided into three sections. The first, “Origins,” explored the legendary tales of Qu Yuan and Wu Zixu—two heroes whose stories anchor dragon boat culture in loyalty and remembrance. The second, “Types of Dragon Boats,” broadened students' perspectives by showcasing not just racing and ornamental boats, but also land dragon boats from inland regions. The third, “Dragon Boat Racing,” zoomed out to a global view, covering team roles, race formats, world championships, and the sport's Olympic ambitions.
What truly stood out, however, were the physical exhibits. A striking dragon head and tail set, a weathered wooden oar next to a sleek carbon-fiber paddle, and—most personally—Rachel's own collection of competition medals. These items gave the display a tangible, heartfelt touch: she wasn't just teaching about dragon boating; she lives it. “I hope more people can learn about dragon boating and feel the power of moving together as one,” she shared. Her passion for the culture drove the entire project, from research to setup.
Through objects and stories, the exhibition brought tradition to life. It left students not only with a deeper appreciation for dragon boating, but also with a sense of how ancient customs can resonate globally. Come next Dragon Boat Festival, many may find themselves remembering more than just rice dumplings—they'll hear the splash of oars and feel the surge of a thousand years of unity.
