To encourage students to reconnect with the curiosity that first drew them to biology, the Circle of Willis Neuroscience Club and the Dr.Bio Biology Club jointly organized 2026 "BioWeek - Exploring Life" activity session. Throughout the week, students participated in interactive activities, laboratory workshops, and academic exhibitions that extended biological learning beyond the classroom.
The lunchtime activities held in the fourth-floor atrium attracted enthusiastic participation throughout the week. Students designed dried-flower bookmarks, competed in the pipette tip speedrun and neuroscience trivia challenge, enjoying the beauty of biology in a relax way. What's more, live leaderboards added a friendly competitive element. We provided top performers with handcrafted soaps in shapes of anatomical organs and legos in shapes of pipettes to further increase participation interest.
Beyond the lunchtime activities, we also provided students with after-school laboratory sessions. Held in the biological laboratories in school from Monday to Thursday, the workshops covered ecology, molecular biology, and biodiversity. Students dissected owl pellets to investigate food webs, performed bacterial plasmid transformations to explore genetic engineering techniques and observed the results under florescence microscopy for qualitative analysis, extracted pigments from cochineal insects to create lipsticks, and produced leaf vein bookmarks and butterfly specimens to learn basic methods used in botanical and entomological studies.
Apart from the activity sessions, the academic exhibitions were another major component of BioWeek. The Dr.Bio Biology Club presented the topic "Milestones in Molecular Biology: 2003–2025", introducing major developments in molecular biology over the past two decades. From the completion of the Human Genome Project to advances such as CRISPR gene editing, mRNA vaccines, single-cell sequencing, and AI-assisted drug discovery, the exhibition demonstrated how biological research continues to shape medicine and biotechnology.
Complementing this exhibition, the Circle of Willis Neuroscience Club presented the topic of "The Evolution of Nervous Systems", which examined how nervous systems evolved from simple cellular signaling to complex cognition. Through key evolutionary milestones, students explored the emergence of nerve nets, neural centralization, brain diversification, and higher cognitive functions, gaining a broader understanding of nervous system evolution across the history of life as well.
In the end, as BioWeek 2026 concludes, students leave with not only memorable experiences but also a deeper appreciation for the science and beauty of life. Thank you so much to SSBS for providing this opportunity to hold the activity, and thank you so much to all the students who came to join us. We hope that the curiosity and enthusiasm sparked during the week will continue to inspire future scientific exploration.
