On the evenings of May 27, 28, and 29, the SSBS auditorium was transformed into the small Canadian town of Gander, Newfoundland. For over one hundred minutes each night, time stood still. The school's annual musical production of Come From Away was, by any measure, the most ambitious undertaking in the program's history: three consecutive shows, two parallel casts, unprecedented stage transformations and a production team that had been quietly building toward this moment a year ago.
Those three May evenings were the product of nearly nine months of preparation. Rehearsals in optional classes had begun the previous September, and by late May, the pace had intensified dramatically. The scale of what the team attempted was not lost on anyone involved. For the first time in the school's history, the stage itself was physically extended forward by one meter; alongside it, the team also constructed the school's first-ever lighting gantry beside the stage. These technical additions gave the production a new visual dimension.
The production was also lucky enough to bring in professional expertise. Director and China Music Drama Association council member Mr. Zhang Yinglun, a professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music's musical theatre department, gave the cast personal guidance on their acting. This mentorship pushed the ensemble's performances to a level of nuance and intention they might not have otherwise reached. Choreography for key musical numbers was handled by Ms. Junie Fang, who gave her time generously teaching cast members how to dance their heart out.
And that emotional range is considerable. The opening number, Welcome to the Rock, set the tone with a warmth and momentum that immediately drew audiences in, declaring Gander's character before the planes even landed. From there, songs like Blankets and Bedding, 28 Hours, and Darkness and Trees traced the mounting anxiety and disorientation of passengers held on the tarmac with little information and no end in sight. The middle section of the show — In The Bar / Heave Away, Prayer, Costume Party — mirrored the slow, tentative opening of both the town's doors and the passengers' hearts, as fear was replaced with connection and gratitude. And at the end, Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere and Something's Missing captured the bittersweet ache of a strange, suspended world coming to a close, and the grief of having to leave behind something that, against all odds, had become precious.
Within that arc, the ensemble brought the full weight of the story to life. Kelly Cao (10-7) and Cici Gu (11-4), sharing the role of Annette/Beverley, each delivered Me and the Sky with a force, chronicling Beverley Bass's decades-long fight to become the first female captain at American Airlines. Michael Mi and Alex Chen as Nick, alongside Sisily Jiang (11-2) and Margaret Liu (11-2) as Diane, found an improbable love story born out of crisis, tenderly exemplified in the song Stop the World. Gracie Zhou's (10-2) Hannah, alongside understudy actress Lucia Lu (10-1), tore through I Am Here with devastating clarity, and Chris Zhu's (12-1) Kevin T. offered something quieter but no less affecting in Prayer. Noah Li (11-6) and Rupert Li (10-5) as Kevin J. traced the arc of a man braced for prejudice and met instead with open arms, while Jonathan Hu's (10-5) Claude and James Xing (10-8)'s Oz anchored the Gander side of the story with warmth and steadiness as the mayor. Barbie Mu's (11-6) Bonnie, Lucy Fang (11-8) and Suri Zhu's (12-1) Beulah, and Lisa Li (11-4) and Selina Yi's (10-8) Janice each threaded through the show with their care: feeding animals on board, finding homes for every last passenger, and keeping the town's information flowing. Terry Qiu's (12-2) Bob, with his final act of passing a hat down to raise money for the town's scholarships, showed the show's argument: kindness, even in its smallest form, is worth something.
None of it would have come together without the many people working quietly in the background. Here, we would like to offer our most sincere thanks to everyone involved:
The executive production team — Ms. Channy Yang, Alex Chen, Cassidy Zhou, Kelly Cao, Emma Hu, Michael Mi, and Sindy Zhao ( 11-5) — helmed the entire enterprise, with several of them also leading individual teams.
The stage art team, led by Emma Hu and Cassidy Zhou alongside Aurora Xu (11-5), Selina Shao (10-2), Avery Guo (10-7), and Cataleya Cao (11-5), handled all set, background and lighting affairs.
Makeup for both the April shoots and the live shows was taken care of by Cassidy Zhou, Emma Hu, Nelly Zhang (12-4), and Britney Chen (10-2).
The publicity team ( Cassidy Zhou, Alex Chen, Michael Mi, Isabella Liu (11-7), Elan Zhu (11-4), Leo Qu (11-3) and Ena Yu (10-8) managed the production's public presence, with Sindy Zhao overseeing ticketing and finances.
The live score was performed by the band: Emily Yang (12-1), Ricky Shi (12-2), and Yasutaka Minejima (12-7).
Backstage and filming support came from Mr. Li Jun, Mr. Chen Yu, Mr. Qu Haorui, Ms. Xue Yawen, Kenneth Wang (12-4), Abby Zhou (12-2), Michael Mi, and Alex Chen, with subtitles managed by Alex Chen, Elan Zhu, Mike Mao (11-4), Alex Zhu (11-6), Margaret Liu, and Noah Li.
Outside sound, filming and lighting support was generously provided by the SSBS High School Television Station and Energy Club.
Special thanks go to Abeni Zhang, Bob Zhang, Austin Xiang, Shero Zhu, and Daniel Li for their support throughout.
Three shows. Two casts. Nine months of work. One town in Newfoundland that, for a few nights in May, came alive again on the SSBS school stage and reminded everyone what it looks like when people, against all odds, choose to show up for each other.
