On Thursday, May 21st at 4:00 PM, the highly anticipated Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) Admissions Panel took place in Room 016. The event featured five outstanding high school seniors who recently received admission letters from CMU, with Teacher Zhang Li serving as the moderator. The panel drew a large crowd of students and parents, filling the room to capacity with an enthusiastic atmosphere. This year, the five seniors achieved a remarkable sweep across CMU’s core prestigious colleges, securing admissions into the School of Computer Science, the College of Fine Arts, the College of Engineering, the Tepper School of Business, and the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Led by Teacher Zhang Li, the panelists engaged in a deep, step-by-step discussion to share the ins and outs of their application journeys.
The discussion kicked off with the students sharing the origins of their academic passions and the moments that sparked their deep interest in their respective fields. When reflecting on why they chose CMU, the panelists unanimously highlighted the university's powerful interdisciplinary inclusivity as its greatest appeal. They noted that CMU's unique academic environment, which seamlessly blends fields like computer science with drama and music, makes cross-disciplinary development a reality.
True insight comes from firsthand experience. Immersing themselves in the campus culture before submitting their applications gave the students invaluable clarity and confidence. Stone, who was admitted to the College of Fine Arts, shared his experience attending CMU's highly competitive Music Summer Program. He noted that the immersive program not only significantly elevated his professional skills but also allowed him to adapt to the rigorous course pace ahead of time and bravely explore interdisciplinary areas he had never tried before. Two other panelists spoke from a different perspective, sharing how physical campus visits uniquely boosted their applications. Christina mentioned that a deep conversation with an admissions advisor during her visit provided massive insights; the advisor’s patient and welcoming attitude, paired with CMU's distinctive architecture, left a lasting impression. Meanwhile, Priscilla shared that she was completely captivated by the vibrant theatrical atmosphere on campus.
Standing out in a sea of identical applications requires uniquely tailored extracurricular profiles. The five panelists offered different strategies based on their own journeys, but they all shared a common piece of advice: designing activities should not be about rigidly adhering to a specific major's checklist, but rather about pursuing genuine interests and following one's heart. They emphasized that authentic intrinsic drive is what gives an activity its depth and sustainability.
The application essay serves as the ultimate window for presenting one's true identity to admissions officers, a topic that brought out profound reflections from the panelists. Claire candidly shared that crafting her essay was a continuous process of self-reflection, constant refinement, and vulnerability. Stone explained how he built his essay around a vivid, real-life story from his past performances, giving the narrative a strong visual impact. The other students agreed that essays must be grounded in genuine emotion to convey what matters most to the applicant. They strongly advised younger students to authentically showcase their own growth and lived experiences.
As the panel drew to a close, the seniors left the audience with heartfelt reflections and advice. Addressing the crowd's biggest concern—maintaining balance—the panelists drew from their own high school experiences to offer practical strategies on how to allocate time and energy among GPA, standardized testing, and extracurricular activities. This was followed by an interactive Q&A session, where the seniors and Teacher Zhang Li patiently answered specific audience questions regarding university preparation, course selection, and stress management, wrapping up an evening packed with practical takeaways.
The success of this panel not only showcased the brilliant achievements of the school's students but also provided invaluable real-world experience and clear guidance for underclassmen and parents planning their own academic futures. Congratulations again to the five seniors on their outstanding achievements, and may all students look to them as inspiration to plan wisely, move forward with conviction, and write their own success stories.
