At the start of 2026, stepping into the fourth-floor atrium instantly transported visitors across continents. The exhibition “Journey to Mexico,” curated by Grade 11 student Li Buran (Kaia), captivated the entire school community with its vibrant celebration of Mexican culture.

Kaia shared that her fascination with Mexico began seven years ago—with a single, unfamiliar Spanish syllable in seventh grade. Since then, she has dedicated four years to studying the language, and the contours of this distant land have grown ever clearer in her imagination. In the summer after tenth grade, she courageously chose Mexico as the destination for her summer program. For one full month, she immersed herself completely: attending university courses, honing her spoken Spanish at a language center, exploring cities on weekends, visiting museums, savoring local cuisine—and living, quite literally, as a “Mexican.”

Even before returning home, Kaia had already resolved to bring Mexico to SSBS. She wanted her peers to experience cultural diversity firsthand and see a Mexico beyond stereotypes—authentic, warm, and deeply human.

The exhibition was thoughtfully divided into four sections: an informative panel display, a showcase of authentic Mexican artifacts, a curated book corner, and the most popular spot—the Mexican food tasting station.

The panels went beyond introductions to Mexico’s history, cities, festivals, and artists. They also featured Kaia’s personal reflections, revealing her keen social observations and profound humanistic concern. Many photographs captured everyday moments of Mexican life. “Each of these images holds a story,” Kaia explained. “Beyond the exotic scenery, what moved me most was the warmth of strangers.”

At the central display table, students gathered around traditional Mexican items: maracas (shakers), colorful “LELE” dolls, piñatas, and even memorabilia from lucha libre (Mexican wrestling). Most striking of all was a meticulously crafted miniature Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) altar—adorned with marigolds, hand-painted skulls, a skeletal bride, and a “spirit cat”—evoking the magical world of Coco. 图片

To deepen the cultural immersion, Kaia turned to food—believing that “the codes of culture are often hidden in everyday flavors.” She set up a fun sensory experiment: comparing Coca-Cola bottled in Mexico with its domestic counterpart, inviting classmates to taste the difference. Many left the booth not only delighted by the crunch of tortilla chips paired with zesty salsa but also inspired to add a new item to their snack wishlists. 图片

This small-scale exhibition offered a remarkable journey to Mexico without ever leaving campus. More importantly, it reminded us that true understanding begins with curiosity and grows through shared experience. As the atrium transformed into a window across oceans, we were invited to look beyond borders—not just to observe, but to connect.

Indeed, this exhibition transcended mere knowledge-sharing. It was one student’s passionate act of turning a personal journey into a public cultural event—a modest yet meaningful effort to move from “I” to “we,” from wonder to empathy. In a world that often feels fragmented, such acts of sharing become bridges to a richer, more inclusive future.
