‘But Poetry, Beauty, Romance, love—these are what we stay alive for.’

On the evening of January 4, 2026, the annual stage play Dead Poets Society, produced by the Drama Club, premiered in the auditorium of Shanghai Starriver Bilingual School.

Entirely directed and performed by students, this play is set in an American high school in the 1950s. It tells the story of literature teacher Mr. Keating and a group of young students, exploring profound themes of growth, freedom, art and ideals, and bringing a soul-stirring audio-visual feast to the school's teachers, students and parents.

The production was directed by Geng Jiahao, Wang Siqi and Jiang Zhizhi; with Cao Zhiying as stage manager, Wang Xinyu as art director, Zhang Zhiyun in charge of publicity, and Luo Yuchen as producer. The entire performance was carefully guided by Mr. Seyoum and Ms. Hall. Actors includes Wu Tong, Ran Yufei, Wang Xiaoyi, Wu Yuchen, Li Chengen, Wang Zimeng, Li Yanpeng, Ji Sihan, Huang Yanming and others, the cast created vivid and round characters with their exquisite acting skills, drawing the audience into the youthful world conflicting between ideals and struggles.

In the play, Ran Yufei, in the role of Mr. Keating, injected vitality into the Starriver’s campus with ‘his’ unconventional teaching methods. ‘He’ guided the students to tear up the dogmatic poetry textbooks, encouraged everyone to create their own poems, and awakened the students' passion for life with the phrase "Carpe Diem".

Wu Tong played the part of Neil, who, together with his friends, accidentally discovered that Mr. Keating was once a member of the Dead Poets Society. They then revived the glory of the club, lit the torch of literature in a cave, read aloud and created freely, letting the passion and dreams of youth bloom in the dark night. When Neil bravely pursued his dream of acting against his father's wishes and shone brilliantly in ‘A Midsummer Night's Dream’, the audience burst into applause. But when his ideals were shattered by reality, Neil's tragic ending plunged the entire audience into silence.

In the end, the students stood on their desks and shouted "O Captain My Captain" to bid farewell to Mr. Keating, who was forced to resign. The profound teacher-student friendship and unyielding idealism pushed the play’s emotions to a climax, and profoundly interpreted that "Poetry, beauty, romance, love—these are what we stay alive for."

To present this performance, the crew incorporated many innovative elements into the production. As the director Geng Jiahao said: "During the production of Dead Poets Society, we integrated many innovative elements: scenes unfolding in front of the curtain, immersive interactions where actors walked into the audience... This is our profound interpretation of the characters' inner worlds and the presentation of the script—the creative concept that makes the performance stand out. However, behind the splendor of the stage lies untold backstage stories: the brightly lit auditorium at eight or nine o'clock in the evening, the repeated curtain pulls—members of drama club poured their sweat into every scene. The spirit of Dead Poets Society truly ignited all of us: polishing every detail countless times, just to present this 'Life Extraordinary' to every audience member here tonight.

Behind the stage presentation was the dedicated effort of the entire crew. Countless after-school hours were spent by the actors, repeatedly improving their lines and expressions. Every item carefully crafted by the team bore distinct marks of the era, making the stage scenes truly tangible. It was this dedication and love for art that made this interpretation of "extraordinary life" so touching.

At the end of the performance, the applause lasted for a long time. The actors and staff took the stage one after another to express their gratitude, and the audience stood up to clap, cheering for this wonderful performance and being deeply moved by the passion and perseverance of these young people. This performance was not only a drama showcase, but also evoke cries for ideals and breakthroughs by the students of SSBS. It showed us that when youth collides with passion, and when ideals stand along courage, the most dazzling light can bloom.

Special thanks to the school authorities, SSBS TV and all teachers for their strong support for this performance. We look forward to the Drama Club bringing more musicals in the future, and continuing to convey the power of youth in the name of drama.
