On May 16, 2025, as summer approached, Shanghai Starriver Bilingual School’s 117th Art Salon, “ Time’s Poetry” opened with an enchanting piano recital. Jacky captivated the audience with a repertoire of seven solo piano pieces, spanning from the Baroque era to contemporary works, creating a truly mesmerizing musical experience.

“ Hello everyone, I am Jacky Zhang. I have been contemplating for a long time about how to present to you all the pieces I've played and their unique styles before officially organizing this concert. To this end, I have collected representative works from various eras — classical, baroque, romantic, and modern — and included them in today’s performance. Each piece reflects the characteristics of its era. I hope you can hear the differences between each period in my playing, appreciate the genius of these master composers, and enjoy this moment.

Before his fourth piece, Jacky took a moment to chat with the audience about Brahms:
“So before I play this next piece, I'm curious - does anyone here know what style Brahms composed in? [pause] Well, here's something interesting about him: Brahms was technically a Romantic composer, but he never abandoned classical forms. He had this amazing ability to combine the emotional power of Romantic music with the disciplined structures of classical tradition - all while staying true to his own artistic vision. His music is both grand and meticulously crafted, yet he always kept things elegant and refined. Now I'm going to play his Rhapsody No. 2 in G Minor, which I think really shows off Brahms' unique style beautifully.”
下半场
5. Fantaisie Impromptu in C sharp Minor, Op.66, Chopin
6. Rondo Capriccioso, Op.14, Mendelssohn
7. Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence,
Ryuichi Sakamoto
Before performing his final piece, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Jacky shared some thoughts about the composer:
“ For my final piece, I'll be playing Ryuichi Sakamoto's Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence. Like his other iconic film scores - The Last Emperor and The Sheltering Sky - this piece carries that signature Sakamoto quality: a profound, almost fatalistic melancholy that runs through his music. His melodies move between gentle introspection and powerful surges, yet always maintain that unmistakable Sakamoto essence. Some compositions simply bear their creator's indelible mark - and this is quintessential Sakamoto. ”

The concert gracefully concluded with the moving melodies of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, marking the successful completion of Shanghai Starriver Bilingual School's 117th Art Salon.
The concert may be over, but the beautiful music still lingers in our hearts. For Jacky, this recital was more than just a performance - it gave him courage, confidence, and unforgettable memories. It has inspired him to practice even harder, with hopes of holding another piano recital in high school. Through his playing, the audience could feel Jacky's deep love for music and all the colorful emotions he put into every note. As Franz Liszt beautifully put it: “Music speaks straight to the heart - it's like the air we breathe, the very pulse of life itself.”
