The 106th Salon - “MicroStellar” Chemistry Microphotography exhibition
On May 26, 2024, Shanghai Starriver Bilingual School welcomed the 106th Salon - “MicroStellar” Chemistry Microphotography exhibition. The salon was held in the Art Salon Gallery on the second floor of the Complex Building, with Mr. Bao directing the exhibition, Mr. Chen, Mr. Wu, Mr. Chen, and Mr. Xu co-directing the project, and the three students, Kerry Wang, Daniel He, and Bob Zhang, being the organizers. Teachers, students and parents were invited to the opening ceremony of the salon, where they experienced a feast of art and science.
“MicroStellar”, originally changed from “Micro”, also refers to the bright galaxy in the microscopic world. Three high school students from different majors, Chemistry, Engineering, and Film, got together to plan this project with their same love for photography.
These photographs not only show the beauty of microscopic structures in chemical reactions, but also capture their fantastic colors and forms under the microscope through special photographic techniques. Meanwhile, as the three students commented on each photograph, they also mentioned the various knowledge they learned during the project.
Daniel explained the chemical principles behind reactions such as crystallization, metal replacement and precipitation. As the president of Chemistry Club, he is responsible for all of the chemical experiments involved.
Kerry introduced the structure and design of optical microscopes and the principle of the special photographic technique utilizing polarized light. He uses his knowledge in Engineering and Physics to conctruct a complete microphotography setup.
Bob talked about the microphotographic shooting techniques and post-processing algorithms which he uses in the project.
Finally, the live demonstration session allowed the audience to feel the marvel of microphotography. The three students showed their self-developed and built microscope, briefly demonstrated the actual shooting process, observed vitamin C crystals under polarized light and copper sulfate replacing zinc metal. They then answered questions by some of the guests.
After the demonstration, the students had the honor of inviting President Pan to make some comments, and he said, "We always mention interdisciplinary in the university. When we have a very good idea, it requires students of different majors to work together in order to realize it. I am really impressed by the students today. If the students can maintain this spirit of exploration and keep on, I believe this salon is be just the beginning."
