The 9th Let Hope Play Charity Music Gala of SSBS
On November 28, 2025, Shanghai Starriver Bilingual School (SSBS) played host to the 9th Let Hope Play Charity Music Gala, organized by the High School Building Love Club. As audience members filed into the auditorium, a short preview film played on the big screen, unveiling this year's theme: “Life is a wilderness, not a track.” Centered on the core philosophy of “free exploration and being true to oneself,” the gala conveyed the belief that life is not a fixed exam paper but a light-chasing long-distance run. All ticket proceeds will be fully donated to children in remote, underprivileged areas, empowering them to bravely pursue their dreams in their own life’s wilderness.
The evening kicked off with the SSBS Children’s Choir performing The 24 Solar Terms. Their pure voices echoed through the venue, infusing the winter air with warmth and setting a hopeful tone for the entire gala. Six hosts then took the stage to officially announce the start of the event, marking the beginning of a diverse artistic feast.
Guided by Mr. Wang Ziyang, SSBS junior high school students presented a string ensemble of Saint Paul’s Suite, showcasing the harmonious beauty of classical music. A senior high school student delivered a soulful solo of She Said, captivating the audience with their tender interpretation. Meanwhile, a dance group composed of Grade 11 students performed the K-pop number Spaghetti, embodying the confidence and passion of youth through synchronized movements and dynamic energy.
A rich tapestry of musical styles collided and blended on stage, radiating unique charm. Two senior high school students presented a piano medley, skillfully connecting the Xinjiang-style charm of Dance of Spring with the revolutionary passion of Chopin’s Revolutionary Etude—a captivating dialogue between Eastern and Western art. This was followed by a medley of classic pop hits, whose familiar melodies struck a chord with the entire audience. A guzheng solo of Spring Comes to the Xiang River painted a vivid picture of spring through flowing tunes, while the modern dance Shaoxing Road led the audience on a stroll through the quiet streets of the city with graceful movements. Several students took turns performing songs such as Practicing Love and Back-to-Back Hug, depicting emotional depth with delicate expressions, and the K-pop dance group returned to ignite the stage once more with Famous. Additionally, an excerpt from the musical My Bucket List prompted reflections on the meaning of life with its narrative-driven vocals. A group of senior high school students delivered a gentle and poignant rendition of Shostakovich’s Prelude, while a piano medley of La La Land and Legends of 1900 struck a chord about dreams of belonging.
As the gala entered its second half, emotions and energy continued to soar. A senior high school student performed the solo Rain Love, depicting a hazy and persistent emotional landscape with a tender voice. An ensemble of Grade 11 students seamlessly fused Por Una Cabeza and The Light Chaser, weaving a touching journey of “chasing light and dreams” through the interplay of strings and piano. Subsequently, a joint performance by Grade 10 and 11 senior high school students brought the K-pop dance Focus to the stage, captivating the audience with precise, powerful movements and engaging stage presence. The gala reached a heartwarming climax with the musical excerpt Welcome to the Rock from Come From Away. Dozens of students delivered a passionate chorus, celebrating the kindness and solidarity of humanity amid crises and adding profound depth to the “wilderness” theme. For the grand finale, the school band performed Yellow, followed by a powerful rock medley of Don’t Cry and Endless Rain. The alternating gentle melodies and rock energy brought this diverse musical journey to a stunning and lingering close.
Amid prolonged applause, all performers, instructors, and backstage staff took the stage to take a bow. Zhang Xinyan from Class 2, Grade 11—President of the Building Love Club and Director of the gala—expressed gratitude on behalf of the team, stating: “Every act of support tonight has been transformed into a spark illuminating the distant wilderness.” With the final group photo taken, the 9th Let Hope Play Charity Music Gala came to a successful conclusion. Yet the songs, carrying love and hope, have already embarked on a journey across mountains and seas. As the gala’s theme suggests, may every life march bravely through its own wilderness, fearlessly embracing authenticity and shining with unique brilliance.
