The 118th Salon — "萱情格调"

On May 24, 2025, the 118th Art Salon of SSBS, titled "萱情格调" a chamber music concert, gently commenced with the arrival of summer. This art salon was presented by two 10th-grade students from the school: Aurora (Zou Zixuan) on the guzheng and Gladys (Liu Yige) on the piano, under the overall guidance of teacher Judy Du (Ms. Judy). During the salon, Aurora and Gladys each performed four solo pieces, concluding the concert with a collaborative performance of "Farewell Letter," offering the audience a delightful auditory feast.

Gladys: “ Good afternoon, everyone. My name is Gladys from 10-6, and it's a pleasure to share thisevening with you through music. Over the past two months, I've been preparing aprogram that is very close to my heart, and I hope you'll enjoy these pieces as much as I've enjoyed learning them. I'll begin with Tchaikovsky's June, a piece that carries the gentle rocking of a boat on quietwaters, perfect for an afternoon like this. Next,we'll drift into Chopin's Impromptu in C-sharp Minor—a work of fleeting beauty and deep emotion, much like the spontaneity it's named after. Then,we'lltransition to The Butterfly Lovers, a timeless Chinese piece thattells one of the most poignant love stories through its lyrical melodies. Finally, I'll closewith Luv Letter by DJ Okawari—a modern favorite that blends delicate piano with a touchof nostalgic sweetness. Though my preparation time was short, I've poured my passion into each of these pieces, and I sincerely hope they resonate with you. Thank you for listening, and I hope you have a wonderful afternoon! ”

Aurora: “ Until today, I have been playing Guzheng for 3945days. It all began in the first grade when I heard a friend playing the Guzheng. The melodious sound captivated me, and I instantly decided to learn it. Day by day, through countless hours of practice, Guzheng had became an integral part of who I am. It is a unique medium through which I can express my deepest feelings and thoughts. It’s like a dear friend with whom I communicate through music. Today, I am thrilled to be here with Gladys to share this special moment with all of you. ”

"Barcarolle" originally referred to the songs sung by gondoliers in the Venetian canals of Italy—specifically, the traditional black, flat-bottomed, narrow wooden boats called gondolas. These gondoliers' songs, along with vocal and instrumental pieces imitating their style, came to be known as barcarolles. The earliest barcarolles were characterized by their long, lyrical, and melodious phrases, typically in a minor key with a 6/8 time signature. The rhythmic accompaniment mimicked the gentle swaying of the boat and the motion of oars, creating a flowing, pulsating effect. However, Tchaikovsky reinterpreted the barcarolle through a Russian lens. His version departs from the traditional 6/8 meter, instead employing a steady 4/4 rhythm—emphasizing strong-to-weak beats—to evoke the even, measured movement of Russian flat-bottomed boats. Despite this shift, his composition retains the serene, rocking imagery of a drifting vessel.

"This composition draws inspiration from the classical Chinese water-sleeve dance, blending modern sensibilities with traditional elegance.

"Dream": The chang lun (long rolling) technique creates a crystalline effect, like "large and small pearls falling onto a jade plate"—delicately articulated yet fluid, evoking a poetic dreamscape.

"Emotion": Captures the ethereal grace of the water-sleeve dance, depicting a slender maiden twirling with lyrical lightness.

"Dance": The climactic finale unleashes the power of the dance, with dense, leaping rhythms contrasting the preceding sections.

Throughout the piece, glissandos and vibratos weave an otherworldly ambiance,  mirroring the  fluttering sleeves of the dancer."

The performance gracefully concluded with the moving melody of "Farewell Letter," a collaborative piece by Aurora and Gladys, marking the successful completion of the 118th Art Salon at SSBS.

The concert received unanimous acclaim from the audience. Although young performers Aurora and Gladys still show some youthful inexperience in their performance skills, this concert has gifted them with courage, encouragement, confidence and cherished memories. They have resolved to practice even harder, aspiring to hold another piano recital before graduating high school. Through the music, the audience glimpsed the vibrant musical emotions and genuine passion these two young artists harbor in their hearts. Music is a universal language without boundaries - it will undoubtedly accompany these budding musicians on their journey forward, helping them reach ever greater heights!
